New York City is a notoriously difficult city for drivers to navigate. Dealing with the traffic in New York can be a driver’s worst nightmare. However, there are a few ways to alleviate some of the stress of driving in New York.
First, be mindful that there is only one way in and out of the city. The Lincoln Tunnel is a massive tunnel system, but it can back up for miles during peak driving times. Try to avoid typical rush hour traffic hours, such as when people are driving to and from work. It may even be better if you try to plan to drive the opposite direction in which the traffic is flowing, such as drive in during the evening or drive out in the early morning.
Be mindful that people will step off the curbs and dash out in front of you in the blink of an eye. Also, seasoned city drivers will weave in and out of very close traffic. This is more dangerous for them than it is for you, but you do not want to have an accident while in the city.
Parking in the city is not plentiful. Do not plan on finding parking in the street. Parking garages can be expensive, but are a necessary part of a New York driving experience. Many hotels offer parking for their customers, but they will charge you for this service. Parking spaces are at a premium, so do not expect to find deals on parking in New York.
It may be easier to park your car for the day in a garage and then travel the city by subway. You could even park your car at a lot outside the city and then take the train into New York. Driving in the city is best left to those who travel the New York streets every day.
